We’ve recently seen a resurgence in love for period properties. We’ve enjoyed watching some fantastic period renovation projects unfold in front of us, and finding the perfect composite door to fit your aesthetic is an essential part of the process.
We’re vastly experienced in designing and installing composite doors, and creating one to fit a homeowner’s vision perfectly is very rewarding. Whilst we love modern door designs, we’re loving period properties receiving some well-deserved attention.
For those who may not know what exactly places a property under the ‘period’ style, we should probably give you an insight. In truth, there’s no definitive answer, but in architectural terms, it refers to buildings constructed in a certain period and are reflective of the usual style during that era.
Period properties are characterised as such all the way to the outbreak of the First World War, when there was a huge shift in architectural design. The Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian eras can be clearly defined stylistically. As such, there are a few composite doors which we can recommend fitting aesthetically into each of these styles.
Georgian Era
From 1714-1830, Georgian-era properties were built throughout the industrial revolution, after the emergence of new building techniques and materials. The most prominent Georgian period homes are still found in London, showcasing the typical terracing of Georgian-style architecture.
Historically, Georgian style front doors are identified by their symmetrical six-panel mouldings recessed to accentuate the feature. Doors from our Classic Collection, like the Mont Blanc, in a bold colour will fit your Georgian home beautifully. Add hardware like an Urn Knocker to fit in with your vintage aesthetic and your home will stand out in the street.
Victorian Era
Spanning from 1837-1901, the Victorian era was one of innovation and stylistic experimentation. It features a range of architectural styles but is usually identified by its homes’ flashy detailing and decorative features like bay windows.
Like Georgian doors, Victorian-era entrances are panelled, but with four instead of six. Their panels are separated by a mullion, and the top two panels are usually smaller than the bottom two. Our Etna design from our Classic Collection, features the atypical features of a Georgian door, and with a range of customisation options available, it could suit your home’s vibe perfectly.
Edwardian Era
Between 1902-1910, Edwardian properties were characterised by their intricate brickwork and bay windows. This era marked an architectural shift – living conditions for the homes’ inhabitants were given greater attention, as better ventilation and improved levels of natural light were achieved in the construction process.
Our Snowdon door from our Classic Collection features a large, glazed area which you can use to achieve the Edwardian look. We have plenty of glazing options for you to choose from which can help you align your door to your homes’ aesthetic.
